Kraunhia brachybotrys ("Okafuji") at Tanaka-jinja Shrine(Tanaka-jinja-no Okafuji)

田中神社のオカフジ

Wisteria species related to Kumagusu Minakata

Kraunhia brachybotrys (commonly known as “okafuji” in Japan)  is a species of wisteria that grows in a forest at the Tanaka-jinja Shrine, which is designated as a National Site of Scenic Beauty in Japan. Every year, just before “Golden Week” (a week from late April to early May that contains a series of national holidays in Japan),  its flowers come into full bloom. It is said that the world-renowned naturalist Kumagusu Minakata invented its Japanese name “okafuji.” Although it does not bear many flowers, the plant delights visitors to the Shrine with its beautiful presence.
