Flowers of Stauntonia hexaphylla (Japanese Staunton Vine)(Mube-no Hana)

ムベの花

Legend has it that the vine's fruits provide eternal youth and long life.

Stauntonia hexaphylla (Japanese staunton vine) belongs to the same family as Akebia quinata (chocolate vine), and bears reddish-purple fruits in fall. It differs from Akebia quinata in that its fruits do not split open when they ripen, and there is even a legend that the fruits of Stauntonia hexaphylla provide perpetual youth and long life when eaten. Its flowers bloom in spring, and the areas within the wetlands of Tawara in Kushimoto Town where you can see these flowers are located along the walking trail.
