Arisaema urashima(Urashima-so)

ウラシマソウ

Taro Urashima (a young fisher boy in a classic Japanese fairy tale) dips his fishing line in the water.

Kushima Island, an island whose colonies of rare plants are designated as a “Natural Monument of Shingu City,” is a treasure trove of warm-weather coastal plants, where around 120 plant species grow. From April to early May, in the woods on this island, Arisaema urashima, which is also known as urashima-so in Japanese, can be found. It is said that the urashima-so was so named because a long thread-like appendage that hangs from its bract resembles Taro Urashima, a fisher boy in a famous Japanese fairy tale, dropping his fishing line into the water
