The Kumano Hayatama Taisha Grand Shrine Matsuri Festival is one of the Annual Grand Festivals Held at Kumano Hayatama Taisha Grand Shrine, and has been designated as an “Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. The Mifune Matsuri Festival is a sacred festival celebrated as the finale of the Kumano Hayatama Taisha Grand Shrine Matsuri Festival. During the Mifune Matsuri Festival, in a section of the Kumano-gawa River near Kumano Hayatama Taisha Grand Shrine, nine fast-boats compete in an exciting fast-rowboat race, making three laps around Mifune-jima Island located about 1.6 km upstream from the starting location.
