In spring through early summer, Chloranthus serratus grows several spikes of tiny white flowers. This plant typically has two spikes, reputedly described as dancing Shizuka Gozen (court dancer of the 12th century and a mistress of the lord Minamoto no Yoshitsune) and her revenant.
