Autumn at Hosshinmon-oji with the color of autumnal leaves reflected in hand-purifying water

Hosshinmon-oji is located at the entrance to the sacred area of Kumano, and is one of the “Gotai-oji”, the most prestigious five shrines among 99 shrines in Kumano. The poet Fujiwara-no-Teika, who visited here in 1201, wrote that he was moved by the precincts emblazoned with autumnal leaves of so many trees growing here.
