Enjoying the river pilgrimage route

This is a river boat (kawabune) tour that goes down the Kumano-gawa River, which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for serving as a river pilgrimage route. During this tour, the boat travels from the riverbank near a Michi-no-Eki (roadside rest area) called “Dorokyo-kaido Kumano-gawa” (Tanago, Kumanogawa Town, Shingu City) to Gongen Gawara near Kumano Hayatama Taisha Grand Shrine, covering about 16 km downstream in around 90 minutes. The tour is guided by a storyteller on board.

Access

Get on the Kumano Kotsu Bus at a stop near JR Shingu Station or Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine, and get off att “Michi-no-Eki Kumano-gawa”[道の駅熊野川] stop. Then, board a river boat (kawabune) from the Kumano-gawa River Traditional Boat Tour Center (Kawabune Center).
