Butterflies on Tawara Wetland(Tawara shicchi no chou)

田原湿地のチョウ

Like dead leaves

Orange butterflies were dancing on a wetland. However, they looked like dead leaves when they alighted on a tree. They are scarce tortoiseshells (Nymphalis xanthomelas, Japanese name: hiodoshi chou). In Japan, their wing color when they are flying is said to resemble the scarlet-threaded suit of armor (hiodoshi) used in the Warring States period.
