Ceremonial boat passage of the Mifune sacred boat

The Mifune Sacred Boat Ritual and Koza-jishi of the Kochi Matsuri Festival, which is held on the Koza-gawa River in the section from Kushimoto Town to Kozagawa Town, are designated as important intangible folk-cultural properties by the Japanese government. The Mifune Sacred Boat Ritual has been designated as the Japan Heritage “Living with the Whales,” and as an event related to the whale culture. In the Yogomori Shinto Ritual held on the eve of the festival, the Mifune sacred boat produces a fantastic atmosphere while it is slowly navigated around Kochijima Island, which is the object of worship.
