Adenophora Triphylla Var. Japonica(Tsurigane Ninjin)

ツリガネニンジン

Elegant bell-shaped flower

Adenophora triphylla var. japonica (Campanulaceae) produces pale purple flowers in fall on slopes along footpaths and roads. They are 40 to 60 cm in height, and some grow to nearly 1 m. The Japanese name apparently comes from verticillate, downward tsurigane(bell)-shaped flowers, and thick roots just like chosen ninjin (ginseng).
