A Brief Detour: A View of the O-torii Gate from the Observatory（Chotto yorimichi tenbodai karano otorii）
Admiring the O-torii Gate at Sunrise
Pilgrims on their way to Kumano reputedly knelt at Fushiogami-oji and admired the view of the Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine’s Shojoden Hall. Walking past Fushiogami-oji and continuing along the old pilgrimage route to Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine, you will see the signboard of an observatory on your left. Why not take a detour and climb up the stairs? You can catch a great view there of Oyunohara, the former location of Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine, and the O-torii Gate. At sunset the area is misty, but the landscape varies from moment to moment with the changes of the shape of the shadows of the mountains behind you.
Walk down from Fushigami-oji for about 40 min. or climb up from Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine for about 25 min.
