Jizo Buddha statue for Children's Limbo(Sainokawara Jizo)

賽の河原地蔵

Standing in the rain by the Kumano Kodo

This is the Jizo Buddha statue established to pray for those who lost their lives during their Kumano pilgrimage. The stones piled up in front of the statue evoke the image of Children’s Limbo, where children have to pile up stones in vain. Passers-by pile up stones there even now.
