Agemono (hanging decorations) at Kawayu Onsen (Kawayu Juni Yakushi Sai Festival)

At Kawayu Onsen in Hongu-cho, Tanabe City, large papier-mâché ornaments are suspended over the Oto-gawa River annually on January 12. This decoration is for the Kawayu Juni Yakusi Sai Festival. These decorations, called “agemono,” were first displayed from about the middle of the Edo period. They can be seen for around 1 month.

Access

Take a Ryujin Bus from JR Kii-Tanabe Sta. (about 1 hr. 40 min.) or Kumano Kotsu Bus or Nara Kotsu Bus from Shingu Station (about 1 hr.), and get off the bus at Kameya-mae[かめや前].
