The osprey (Pandion haliaetus) is a raptor threatened with extinction in Japan. Presently, several ospreys inhabit the lower reaches of the Tonda-gawa River. The bird has a wingspan of about 1.6 m. Its wings are long and narrow and look whitish when viewed from below. At the area of Tonda-gawa River near Ichinose-oji Shrine, you can see these ospreys plunge into the water to catch fish.
