The common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) is also called the “flying jewel” because of its beautiful dark blue-green or sky-blue color. They are slightly larger than sparrows, and catch crayfish or small fish in the water. If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of them from a bridge over the Ikushi-gawa River where the ancient trail passes.
