The Red Shrine Hall Covered with Snow

Hosshinmon-oji was formerly one of the “Gotai-oji,” the five most prestigious shrines among 99 shrines in Kumano. In the Meiji era, however, the shrine was merged with Misato-jinja Shrine following the Shrine Merger Order, and the shrine hall was relocated to the present location. The current shrine hall building was rebuilt in 1990. You can see this red hall covered with snow only a few times a year. The cold weather freezes even the hand-purifying water.
