Jizo who made herself a vicarious sacrifice

Two statues of Jizo Bosatsu were carved on a large rock located along Dainichi-toge Pass. Legend has it that after Hidari Jingoro, a sculptor in the Edo Period, cut off his apprentice’s nose in an attempt to simply admonish the apprentice, this Jizo Bosatsu lost her nose as a sacrifice of the apprentice. Over the years, the features of the statues’ faces have weathered away.
